An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly." The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant? "The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... The one that's red and has thorns." "Do you mean a rose?" "Yes, that's the one," replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

It was a joy to be home from our long hard trip to Southern Africa. We still revel in the thoughts of such a grand area with so much history of our Christian movement. We are simply happy to be a part of bolstering the faithful wherever we can. What a blessing!! We were in Dar from the 19th of September till the 6th of October. In Dar we got some needed rest around other needed projects.
We were able to record 12 new radio lessons which will be heard across Africa. There is potential for thousands of people to hear the message about how to have a good family. We also advertise WBS and other great study opportunities. This is a program of Pan American Radio in California and is sent to Gabon, West Africa where it is broadcast through Africa Radio. Our program is called "Africa Institute of Marriage and Family" and it is sponsored by the World Radio Gospel Broadcast, a great ministry of the White's Ferry Road Church of Christ.

Janet doing a little encouraging in KipsigisWe finalized the printing arrangements of our new marriage book: Happy Homes & Huts. The church in Tanzania is entitled to VAT tax exemption so I ran around several days getting the paper work in order for that. I left it in someone else's hands to complete.
The Dar es Salaam Choir practices once a week. They are practicing for their Christmas program. We are happy to be singing with such talented folks but we are sorry we won't be there for the performance. Slowly we are getting to know more and more people in Dar. We are also part of a mid-week fellowship of Christian folks from across a broad spectrum of faith.
We had a piano tuner in to tune our old 1908 Upright Grand Piano. It is good to hear Janet once again playing the piano. One night we watched "The Pianist" which is the tragic story of a fantastic Jewish pianist who was caught in the middle of the holocaust in Warsaw, Poland.
One thing I didn't get finished was to register the trailer we bought in 2006. I have been trying for months to get it registered tax free. At last I have failed and we are now having to pay the 20% tax on it. Still it takes time. That trailer will bless our ministry throughout Africa. It is simple but it will give us a good bed in the outback as well as a small kitchen. We sometimes find ourselves in the middle of nowhere.
We visited Mt. Elgon in early October. We just cannot believe how serious the conditions are there. More and more people are leaving their homes and livelihoods because of the continuing atrocities there. After we left, an assistant chief we knew was murdered. No doubt that area will never be the same again. It will take years to recover and even then it will be changed. Many of the people will never move back. Thankfully, through your generosity, we were able to set up the distribution of 220 bags of maize and 32 bags of beans, each of which each weighed 200 lbs. and 200 blankets for the upper colder areas. Again, our Muslim friends, Sadru and Zuleka Esmail in Kimilili town, were most happy to oversee the distribution. [Interestingly, when they had us over for delicious Indian cuisine one evening, we got into a discussion about religion. We asked them some questions about Islam and Zuleka then asked us what the purpose of Christ's death was. She wants a Bible so we are going to give her a Bible in exchange for a copy of the Koran. ] We'll need to take more relief to these displaced, hungry, abused people in February, 2008. Please be thinking about sending us your contributions for that.
It was a joy to spend the next 10 days back in Kipsigis land. We taught 2 M/F seminars and taught a counseling course at the Siriat Bible School in Sotik. It was pure joy to speak in the tongue we have spoken since 1974 and to meet many of the people who are our children in the faith. One grown man introduced himself to me by saying, "hello I'm Fielden." Oh the message is going forth. In one area where we taught where we had helped them start the church in 1982, there are now 13 congregations in the whole area. And we hear of growth in so many places. You who supported that work for so many years can take real joy in knowing that the seed of the Gospel was firmly planted in good soil and is still taking root today. Rejoice with us!! :-)
We are in Nairobi this week teaching the Marriage & Family course to 23 students of the Great Commission School. It is a joy to teach mature English speaking students. We are able to get down to the real heart issues which we sometimes cannot do when using Kiswahili, though we are learning to do that also.
